Visiting the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) in Xi’an is a must for anyone exploring the city, especially during winter when the scenery is uniquely captivating. This itinerary offers a well-planned route to maximize your experience around the pagoda and its surrounding attractions. 1. Red Wall Photography Spot (Dayuecheng – 大悦城)
Start your day at the red wall in front of Dayuecheng, just outside Entrance 3. This wall provides a fantastic backdrop for photos with the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the distance. The rooftop terrace of Dayuecheng is also an excellent spot for photography, offering sweeping views of the pagoda, Tang City of Eternal Night (大唐不夜城), Qujiang Pool, and even the Qin Mountains.
2. Stone Buddha Photography Spot
After capturing photos at the red wall, head south towards the South Square of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Continue into the Tang Da Ci’en Temple Ruins Park (唐大慈恩寺遗址公园) to find the iconic stone Buddha statue. This spot is popular among photographers and is perfect for capturing the essence of the area’s rich history.
3. Chang’an Twelve Hours Themed District
Next, visit the immersive Chang’an Twelve Hours (长安十二时辰) themed district. This indoor area recreates scenes from the popular drama “Chang’an Twelve Hours,” including the Jing’an Bureau and lookout tower. Expect to see live NPCs and occasional performances, making it a lively place. Most visitors here come prepared for photos, so if you’re not planning to dress up, it might not be worth your time. Adult tickets are 128 yuan, while student tickets are 58 yuan.
4. Tang Paradise (大唐芙蓉园)
From the Chang’an district, head east for about 300 meters to reach Tang Paradise. This park is designed to resemble the royal gardens of the Tang Dynasty and is also great for photography. Adult tickets cost 115 yuan, with student tickets priced at 60 yuan.
5. Xi’an Film Studio (西安电影制片厂)
This artistic district is highly recommended for its Xi’an Film Museum. The museum features many interesting artifacts from the film industry, classic movie scenes, and interactive experiences, such as voice dubbing and green screen activities. There’s even a themed haunted house based on “A Chinese Odyssey,” which is both fun and photogenic. Tickets are 99 yuan for adults and 58 yuan for students, making it worth the price.
6. Big Wild Goose Pagoda Fountain
A visit to the pagoda isn’t complete without seeing the fountain show. Make sure to stand in the middle of the northern side of the fountain for the best view. The stunning display of water jets is mesmerizing, and there are videos available online that capture the entire performance. It’s a highlight you won’t want to miss!
7. Roly-Poly Performer
After enjoying the fountain, walk for about ten minutes to the right side of the pagoda, where you will find the Roly-Poly performer. Initially skeptical of such trending spots, I had a delightful experience last year watching her. Prepare to queue as she performs, allowing everyone to have a chance for close interaction. Don’t forget to reach out to her; she loves responding!
8. Poetry Lanterns
Continuing your exploration, head another five minutes to the right of the pagoda to see the enchanting poetry lanterns. This area is dreamy and full of poetic beauty, making it perfect for stunning photographs.
9. Tang City of Eternal Night (大唐不夜城)
Finally, follow the path of the poetry lanterns to arrive at the Tang City of Eternal Night. Locally referred to as Tang Lantern City, this area is bustling with energy, especially in the evening when many performances take place.
