Xi’an, with its rich history and culture, is a perfect destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in traditional Chinese art, antiques, and local life. One of the most exciting ways to experience the city is by strolling through its vibrant antique markets, where you can find unique treasures and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Whether you’re an avid collector or just curious about the local culture, Xi’an’s antique markets offer something for everyone. Here’s your guide to the must-visit antique markets in the city!
1. Datang West Market (大唐西市)
Opening Hours: Every Friday and Saturday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (though it’s already bustling by 8:30 AM)
Location: 118 Labor South Road, Lianhu District, Xi’an
Transportation: Take Metro Line 5 to the Northwestern Polytechnical University Station (西北工业大学站) or Metro Line 6 to the Datang West Market Station (大唐西市站), then walk 700 meters.
If you want to dive into the heart of Xi’an’s antique market scene, Datang West Market is the place to go. It’s widely regarded as the largest and most popular antique market in the city. The market is filled with small stalls offering a variety of antiques, collectibles, and curiosities. You can find everything from ancient trinkets to unique handmade crafts. While it’s a great spot for picking up souvenirs or special items, be cautious when bargaining. Some vendors may overcharge unsuspecting buyers, so it’s recommended to have some knowledge of antiques before making big purchases. For example, once I spent ¥150 on a tiger tooth bead necklace, only to find it on Taobao for just ¥20!
After shopping, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Datang West Market Museum. The museum is housed in a beautiful building designed by renowned architect Liu Kecheng. The lighting and interior design of the museum are stunning, and while the exhibitions are few, the quiet atmosphere makes it a relaxing spot to explore the history behind the antiques and the ancient Tang Dynasty market.
2. Xi Cang Market (西仓集市)
Opening Hours: Thursday and Sunday mornings
Location: East of the Saijin Bridge Morning Market, near Sajin Bridge Primary School.
Transportation: Take Metro Line 1 and get off Sajin Bridge Station (洒金桥站)
For a more local and bustling market experience, head to the Xi Cang Market. Located near Saijin Bridge, this market is packed with visitors and has a lively atmosphere. It’s a great place for those looking for flowers, birds, pets, and especially beautiful ceramic tea sets and “Jianzhan” tea bowls, which are perfect for gifting or taking home as souvenirs. While antiques are less abundant here compared to Datang West Market, the range of handmade pottery and charming animals makes for a fun and unique experience. After browsing the market, be sure to try some local Xi’an breakfast dishes, such as the flavorful meatball soup, egg and vegetable sandwiches, and beef cakes at nearby food stalls.
3. Shuyuanmen (书院门)
Opening Hours: Open all day
Location: From Yongning Gate in the West to Wenchang Gate in the East, running along the ancient city wall.
Transportation: Take Metro Line 2 to Yongning Gate Station (永宁门站).
Shuyuanmen, also known as the Scholar’s Street, is a must-visit for lovers of traditional Chinese art and calligraphy. The street is lined with shops selling exquisite paintings, calligraphy, and handcrafted works of art. While antiques are less common here, you can find beautifully painted scrolls, poems, and other traditional art forms that are perfect for gifts or decor. Many of the vendors will even create personalized artwork for you on the spot. This area is especially charming in the afternoon when the crowds thin out, and the surroundings near the city wall offer a peaceful atmosphere.
Shuyuanmen is also home to a small but impressive cultural space called the Guanzhong Academy, part of Xi’an University of Arts and Sciences. Visitors can check out the academy if they’re interested in Chinese classical studies, although getting a ticket can be difficult. On weekdays, you’ll need to queue at 3:00 PM for the limited 100 tickets, while during holidays, 200 tickets are available at 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM.
