A Day Tour Guide To Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace, And The Song Of Everlasting Regret

Xi’an, the ancient capital of China, is home to some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including the world-renowned Terracotta Army in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the beautiful Huaqing Palace. For history enthusiasts and culture seekers, a day trip that includes these two highlights, combined with the mesmerizing Song of Everlasting Regret performance, is the perfect way to experience the city’s rich heritage. This guide takes you through a detailed and easy-to-follow itinerary, ensuring that you can enjoy all the key sights without feeling rushed.

Getting to the Terracotta Army
Start your day early at 6:40 AM by departing from a hotel near the Bell Tower (钟楼). Make sure to purchase your entrance tickets to the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor through their official WeChat account in advance (tickets cost 120 RMB per person).

Getting to the Terracotta Army
Take Line 6 of the Xi’an Metro at Guangji Street Station (广济街站), heading towards Fangzhicheng Station (纺织城站). Then, transfer to Line 9 at Fangzhicheng and travel to Huaqingchi Station (华清池站) (C exit). The entire journey takes about 90 minutes. This is a great time to catch up on some rest and prepare for the exciting day ahead!

Arriving at the Terracotta Army
Once you arrive at the Huaqingchi Metro Station, you’ll find the 613 Tourism Line bus right outside. A quick scan of the QR code to pay 5 RMB will get you on the bus, which will take you directly to the Terracotta Army.
Once at the site, the best way to explore is by following the route of Pit 1 → Pit 3 → Pit 2. The earlier you arrive (around 8 or 9 AM), the fewer crowds you’ll face, allowing you to capture a full view of Pit 1 and even touch some of the dirt on the sculptures!

Additional Attractions
After visiting Pit 2, the guide will lead you to a simulated underground tomb, but if you’re like me, you may decide it’s not worth the extra fee. Save your money and head out instead!
As you exit, you’ll find a commercial street. If you’re hungry, you can take a break here to grab a snack, although don’t expect anything particularly delicious or cheap.

Visiting Lishan Garden
Return your rented audio guide and get your deposit back, then head to the free shuttle bus to Lishan Garden. The shuttle will take you to the site, and once you get off, head towards the East Gate. You’ll need to buy a 15 RMB ticket for the electric car to see the famed bronze chariot and horses, which are quite impressive but can feel a bit hot under the sun—so be sure to stay hydrated!

Huaqing Palace Visit
After exploring Lishan, take the shuttle back to the Terracotta Army and catch the 613 bus back to Huaqingchi Metro Station. Across the street is Huaqing Palace, where you can relax at a nearby snack street or small square before heading in.
While the afternoon is a good time to visit Huaqing Palace, the heat might make you want to rest first. I honestly feel there’s not much to explore, and the 120 RMB ticket for the entire package (including the Longest Love Song) isn’t entirely worth it unless you’re planning to watch the performance.

The Longest Love Song Performance
For a truly unforgettable experience, don’t miss the Song of Everlasting Regret – an incredible visual performance set against the stunning backdrop of the palace. It’s highly recommended to see the second show, which starts at 9:35 PM. If you’re pressed for time, I suggest attending the first show at 8:10 PM. The performance lasts for 70 minutes and offers a visually spectacular experience that’s not to be missed.

Returning to the Hotel
After the performance, take the metro back the same way you arrived. Since I left about 10 minutes early, the metro wasn’t crowded, and I got back to my hotel just in time to rest and relax after an action-packed day.
